夢回唐朝，我做不到，因為唐朝還沒有照相機，無法想像當時的生活。唯1868年，法國政府官員Jules Itier把西方剛發明的攝影技術，帶到了地圖上也找不到的澳門，讓150年的我還可以「夢回南灣」。

20世紀初在澳門生活的葡國文學家文第士曾這樣形容澳門：「一個在里斯本入睡，因魔法的作用在香港醒來的葡國人可能不知身在何處，但是能夠肯定自己不在葡國的土地上；然而，同樣的一個葡國人在九島附近醒來，坐船向前行駛，遠遠望見松山聖母小堂，接著是山頂醫院和嘉思欄兵營，再往前是南灣街的一排排住宅，後面是燒灰爐街的建築，高處是西望洋山聖母堂，他馬上會對自己說：不知是何處，但是我看到的是一座葡國海濱城。」

Silva Mendes, a Portuguese writer who lived in Macau in early 20th century, wrote about Macau, “A Portguese who falls asleep in Lisbon and, by magic, wakes up in Hong Kong, wouldn’t be able to know where he was, but he surely would know that it was not a Portuguese city. If the same Portuguese woke near the Nine Islands and further on could see, from the ship, the Chapel of Our Lady of Guia, then the Hospital de S. Januario, further along the S. Francisco barracks with the vast row of houses along Praia Grande, beyond those of the Chunambeiro and then; on the top of the hill, the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha, he would say to himself: I don’t know what city it is, but it is, certainly a Portuguese city by the sea-side.”
